Lawrence Lessig has created a petition to build support in Congress for the Public Domain Enhancement Act. The act would require copyright holders to pay $1 to extend their copyrights after 50 years. If they fail to pay, the work automatically becomes part of the public domain. This simple measure would do much to reverse the stagnation of ideas caused by the government's repeated extentions of copyright. If you are interested in protecting the public domain, please read and sign the petition.
