Formac sucks

These stories about Formac sound so familiar. Those of you who know me know what I went through after buying a sporadically non-functioning CD burner from them. The only way I was able to get any action was to report them to the BBB. Even then, they lied to the BBB that they had already given me an RMA number, which I got after the BBB sent me Formac's response.

Reading between the lines

Thank you for buying this music and for supporting the artists, songwriters, musicians and others who've created it and made it possible.

We listed the artist first to make up for the fact that we, the “others”, are really making all the money.

Please remember that this recording and artwork are protected by copyright law. Since you don't own the copyright, it's not yours to distribute. Please don't use Internet services that promote the illegal distribution of copyrighted music, give away illegal copies of discs or lend discs to others for copying.

We're finally going to concede that there is such a thing as fair use. Go ahead and make copies for yourself. But we're still asking you nicely to not give the music to your friends.

It's hurting the artists who created the music.

But it's hurting the “others” even more, and we don't like that.

It has the same effect as stealing a disc from a store without paying for it.

If we keep telling you this, you'll believe it, right?

Applicable laws provide severe civil and criminal penalties for the unauthorized reproduction, distribution and digital transmission of copyrighted sound recordings.

We thanked you for giving us money. And we asked you nicely not to give our “property” away. But what we really mean to say is that we don't trust you, our valued customer, and will sue your ass if we have to.

OS X switches to bash

The latest developer build (via Slashdot) of Mac OS X Panther uses the bash shell by default. In previous versions, tcsh was the default. I'm not a huge shell user, so I don't mind tcsh. My Linux-using friends tell me I'm missing out.

Autotuners

I know it's not really anything new, but this article (via Slashdot) about the widespread use of autotuners in live performances disgusts me. It's obvious that the music industry and its non-music-loving customers prefer a cheap, glossy coating over quality.

I'll stick to listening to gritty, soulful, imperfect recordings like Hendrix's Band of Gypsies, thank you very much.

Bob

This post about lazy, unemployed IT workers, and its followup (via Kasia Trapszo), are right on the money.

OpenOffice for OS X delayed

OpenOffice will not run natively in OS X until 2006, according to the project's Mac timeline (via Slashdot). How disappointing. I'm really looking forward to totally removing Microsoft from my computers.

Say rock!

Yesterday, I was saddened to find out that Wesley Willis passed away (via Marusin) on Thursday. I never got to see him perform, but did see him selling his rock CDs at the Metro a couple times. I vividly remember him walking up and down the line waiting outside, head-butting semi-frightened people and telling them to “say rawr” or “say rock”. Of course, people couldn't help but be intimidated by this giant of a man. But once they realized that he was just being friendly, they warmed up to him.

Nigerian scam spreads

It looks like everyone wants to get in on the Nigerian e-mail scam. Two of my favorites: SCO (via Slashdot) and Dubya.

Jenn's new site is up. Yes, I know it looks exactly like my site. We're working on that.
