Keeping track of conversations

Does anyone know if someone has figured out a good way for people to keep track of conversations on blogs? E-mail notification and RSS feeds for individual posts do not count.

There has to be a better way than writing an e-mail to the person on the other end of the conversation to inform them that you've written to them on your blog.

6 Comments feed

I've read about people incorporating the whole MT Trackback piece into comments (I was a talk last Spring done by Ben and Mena Trott) and they talked about ways that have people have done something similar. I know I've seen examples but right now don't know of any off the top of my head..

One thing that really helps that I've seen around is people including the comments to a post within their RSS Feed (not a separate feed of comments). I have been doing preliminary changes to revamp my site and that's one thing I want to incorporate when I roll out my new design.

Thanks for reminding me of that technique. Joi Ito used to have a feed like that, but I can't find it now.

Keep us posted if you come up with something (said with ernest anticipation)

I just thought about something… Why not incorporate a script that fires off when ever anyone posts to the comments that will notify everyone who has commented that there is something new.

You can have a checkbox to “opt-in” that you want to be notified of responses (similar to how a lot of forums work)… I might try hacking around with this idea in MT (if it hasn't been done already). Your CMS system is home-brewed, right?

(whoops sorry) i just read the “E-mail notification and RSS feeds for individual posts do not count”

I need to read the post rather than interpret it in my head I guess… :)

I've partially implemented that already. All registered users get an e-mail notification. I'm afraid to open that up to everyone because my host might think I'm spamming.
