FastCompany's linking policy

Cory Doctorow points out FastCompany's clueless linking policy. This post violates that linking policy many times.

Incredible. How could a mag calling itself “fastcompany” … ugh.

I'd guess that it's largely a CYA thing from the legal department. I can imagine them being afraid that perhaps some other site will say something inflammatory with a link to FastCompany somewhere, and wind up getting dragged into some libel lawsuit.

Not that that's particularly realistic or likely, but hey, they're lawyers. They get paid big bucks to sit around and think like that…

I'm not sure that that's the point of the notice. I think it's an attempt to “control the brand.” Someone from the marketing department probably found pages that linked to fastcompany.com that didn't have such nice things to say about them. Like this post. So they told legal to figure out a way to keep this from happening. The best they could come up with is language that makes it sound like you could get in trouble for linking to their site in the hopes that it will put a little fear into people. Of course, it's total nonsense.
