LJ has its own rich text editor. Apparently a lot of people use it, but I’ve never been able to make it work at all. The various LJ client programs usually have their own formatting tools, as well.
A lot of folks also use the “auto” text formatting, which formats newlines to <br>s and URLs to links and leaves it at that. You can use as much HTML as you want in an entry, but if you screw up too badly, you’ll break it and it’ll spit out exactly what you typed.
Comments also support Markdown.
Swell!
Now let’s make it part of the CR. ;)
I’ll probably add it to the new platform. Does LiveJournal have Markdown?
