EP

The soundtrack for this week has been The Fiery FurnacesEP. That title is quite a misnomer. The album consists of ten songs with a running time of 41:04. I guess, when compared to their previous album, Blueberry Boat, which is over 76 minutes long, the name fits. Usually, EPs are filled with stuff that either didn’t fit into the LPs or wasn’t good enough to make the cut. The music on EP certainly doesn’t fall into the latter category. With the exception of a couple songs, everything on this album is way above average. Even the weak spots are good. They’re just not as great as the rest.

Anyway, I can’t get enough of this band. Yeah, their music can be somewhat cheesy. It’s sure to make aficionados of Metallica think less of you. But in a lot of ways it fulfills my inner-child fantasies about what rock music should be. It’s noisy, beautiful, messy, complex, and childish. And it feels good.

Where do you usually buy your music at, Matt? Online or at a local retailer? Just wondering.

For a while, I was buying stuff from iTunes. But then I decided that I didn’t want to deal with the DRM when I eventually have to switch over to a new computer. I generally buy from any online store that has what I want in stock. I’m not particular. I’d love to buy locally, but if you’re looking for something that’s not on popular radio, you can forget about finding it in Vancouver. I’m sure I could find good stuff in Portland, but I don’t know where things are over there yet.

for starters, speaking as an afficianado of Metallica and most other things metal, I actually think more of you, because from what I’ve heard, they’re a hell of a band.

secondly – for local music, Everyday Music makes me happiest in my pants with 2nd Avenue running a close second, but there’s about a billion cool indie shops all over, especially in SE. A bunch of them get together every year and publish a pamphlet called the “Portland Guide to Independant Record and CD Stores”, conviently found at most of the aforementioned cool indie shops. If you don’t find one first, I’ll grab you one next time I’m in that area.

heh. I just saw that you added Music Millenium. They’re pretty good and have been here for ions and ions.

I’m a big fan of Ozone Records. You can find tons of bootlegs at the Eastside Ozone records.

I hear good things about Jackpot Records. (shrug)
