Last rites

CNN is reporting that John Paul II has been given last rites. Very upsetting.

Paul Graham: Return of the Mac

Paul Graham thinks that Apple is on the verge of a huge comeback. I agree, as long as they can avoid doing things that would cause people to unswitch.

A conversation about the French paradox

Josh Friedland, editor and publisher of The Food Section, spoke with four French foodbloggers (via Kottke) about the French paradox. Based on the article, it would seem that exercise, portion control, and high-quality, unprocessed food are keys to good health. Sounds like common sense to me. Yet, so many people, me included, continue to lead unhealthy lives. I can’t help but think that this all stems from a lack of self-discipline. We need to stop blaming the grocery stores and restaurants and buckle down.

Continuations

Don’t bother reading Continuations on the Web unless you’re ready to learn something (or are super smart and already understand continuations). I’m not sure how I’d ever use the concept in my programming, but I’m glad to have learned about it. I used to say the same thing about object oriented programming for the web. That thought just seems foolish now. (via ongoing)

37signals ends support for IE 5

We’re committed to making sure that the Basecamp customer experience is never compromised by old technologies. Supporting Internet Explorer 5.x, a web-browser that is over 4 years old, is preventing us from cleanly and consistently improving the customer experience in a few key areas: most notably speed and instant UI response (instead of having to reload the page when you add or check off to-do items, for example).

Good move.

I looked at this site’s stats to see what percentage of my readers are using IE 5. 8 percent?!?! It’s bad enough that you people are using IE at all. But you could at least be using IE 6.

Portland short on children

The Pearl District in the heart of this perpetually self-improving city seems to have everything in new urban design and comfort, from the Whole Foods store where fresh-buffed bell peppers are displayed like runway models to the converted lofts that face sidewalk gardens.

Everything except children.

I guess there’s only one thing to do. Start making babies. Five hundred of ‘em. (via Gabe)

The origin of Sosumi

Have you ever wondered where the Apple system sound Sosumi got its name? Boing Boing has the story.
