Mike passed me the musical baton. Here we go:
What is my total volume of music?
I have no idea how many physical albums I own. My iTunes collection has:
- 3703 files
- A running time of 22:08:14:37
- 284 artists
- 529 albums
What is the last CD I bought?
What song is playing right now?
Palmcorder Yajna by The Mountain Goats
What five songs do I listen to a lot because they are special to me?
It’s hard to limit my answer to only five songs.
- …which was the Son of… by Arvo Pärt. This song is a choral rendition of the geneology of Jesus. It’s one of those pieces of music that gives me a spiritual experience almost every time I listen to it.
- Chris Michaels by The Fiery Furnaces. To quote myself: “[I]n a lot of ways it fulfills my inner-child fantasies about what rock music should be. It’s noisy, beautiful, messy, complex, and childish. And it feels good.”
- People Do It All The Time by Stereolab. Simply one of my favorite songs.
- Come on! Feel the Illinoise! by Sufjan Stevens. After several weeks of listening to it, I still think it’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard.
- Sleep by Tree Wave. People shouldn’t be able to make songs this good using instruments like these.
Five Six people I’m passing the musical baton to.

Hmm… I have nobody to pass this to, so I guess leaving a comment is as good as any other way. :-)
Music Collection:
CDs: somewhere between 290 and 350; I’m never really sure… MP3 collection: I was thankfully able to get rid of iTunes (yes, I still hate it) and go back to the wonderfulness that is Audion; but according to iTunes, I have a mere 894 songs, at 2 days, 13 hours, 40 minutes, and 3 seconds’ worth. Wow. I have nothing compared to you lot. Those numbers would be much higher if the HDD I lost when last I moved didn’t poop out. I lost 40+ GB of music video and MP3s…
Last Purchased CD: It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to… It was the self-titled album by Stone Sour. I shudder to think how many CDs I’d own if I could afford all the ones I’m after. Sometimes, liking almost everything can be bad. :-)
Current Track: I can’t get this track out of my head; “Better Now”, by Collective Soul.
5 Tracks, Special To Me: Why do people make musical choice limits so unfairly small? :-) In no particular order, I guess at this time it’d be these:
“Canon in D”, Johann Pachelbel: this embodies the power and the spirit of classical / baroque; no other piece from that era can match its’ impact with such simplicity. “Psycho Holiday”, Pantera: if you know me, you know why this is so poignant; if you don’t, well… it’s not worth getting into… “Ace Of Spades”, Motorhead: raw rock, at its’ grittiest and finest; I have always carried this card in with my ID, and the song just seemed to fit me as well. “Disciplined Breakdown”, Collective Soul: again, self-explanatory, if you know me enough to get it. “Everybody Eats When They Come To My House”, Cab Calloway: if there’s anything that sends a stronger “feel-good” vibe than 1930′s jazz / scat, I’ve never found it, and I doubt I ever will. Any of Calloway’s hits would work; this is just the last one I listened to.
It’s hard to limit those tracks, because being a karaoke fanatic, there are a fair number of songs which — when I manage to sing them well — become meaningful for different reasons.
Quizzes like this are evil. :-P
Woohoo! Mountain Goats! Here are my answers:
250 albums or so (not even remotely close to enough; I got a late start). I pretty much only listen to CDs. I don’t have an mp3 player. Yeah, yeah, the horror, I know.
The Mountain Goats’ We Shall All Be Healed (a gift for my dad).
Nothing. Music always takes over my whole attention span, so I pretty much only listen to music when I’m doing something mindless, like dishes or running or data entry or lying on the couch. Commenting in your blog doesn’t qualify as mindless enough! ;)
I hate making lists like that because the number is so arbitrary, and because I always feel like whatever I write has to be true Now And Forevermore, and I just can’t guarantee that. So, instead, here are some of my favorite songs of the moment:
Todd Rundgren — “Couldn’t I Just Tell You” Bleu — “3′s a Charm” Suddenly, Tammy! — “Mark of Man” Wilco — “Ashes of American Flags” The Mr. T Experience — “You’re the Only One” The Mountain Goats — “Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod”
And, well, “The Only Living Boy in New York”, pretty much all the time.
What is my total volume of music?
9080 files A running time of 25.9 days 658 artists 1291 albums
What is the last CD I bought?
Illinois by Sufjan Stevens / Demon Days by Gorillaz (same day)
What song is playing right now?
Jocko Homo (We Are Devo!) by Devo
You missed one of the questions, Gabe. It just so happened to be the most difficult one. ;-)

Oops. I should’ve read that more closely. I thought you were saying that it was on July 20th.
