Now I remember why I don't read anything with Russell Beattie's name on it; he ranks up there in stupidty with Steve Dotto and the man who is the pinnacle of making the IT industry look bad, Leo Laporte.

Weak isn't a strong enough word for that write-up. ;-)

The included OSX apps, whether you use them or not are certainly better than mindsweeper and paint, which in themselves comprise about half of XP's included applications.

Right now every OS is sadly underwhelming...

Iâ€™m not a musician, GarageBand to me isnâ€™t particularly compelling.

That's like saying, "I'm not a gamer, Flight Simulator to me isn't particularly compelling." Is that really a reason not to use Windows?

You've got your wires crossed, Todd.

Although, granted, a 4200rpm HDD is enough to make any machine seem slow, there's nothing Wintel can do that Motorola or Sun can't outdo with ease. If Apple thinks greed is a viable reason to turn all of their products from gold to garbage, then that's their problem. The CPU speed issue is a media brainwash; all processor types are affected by the 90nm barrier, and dual-core is just dual-processor. Don't be fooled by the hype. Wintel will never be their own wet dream, no matter how much they publically stroke their own egos...

I agree with Gabe, Matt. Doubling my RAM to a gig made a difference almost as noticeable as buying a whole new machine. However, if money's not a big issue, you might also consider getting a 5400rpm HDD as well. The only slowness I notice on this l'il beastie is during times of heavy drive access. If / when I can get the faster drive, I will.

Of course, the effects that current upgrade tricks like upping RAM have won't work anymore once the x86 comes. They don't work as well -- double the RAM in a PC and notice how much less a difference it makes. Guess Apple didn't stop to consider important things like this.

Slow? Don’t you run terminal most of the time? Try running Adobe: Indesign, Photoshop, ImageReady, and Illustrator while keeping nice with the corporate email via Entourage. Oh and add Dashboard in there. Yet I’ve gotta say, I have yet to find my 1.5ghz Powerbook slow in any way really. I’d recommend doubling your ram for some speed improvement while you’re waiting for those X86 Powerbooks.
