Is anyone else finding recent releases of Firefox to be totally unusable after a couple hours? I’ve done some of the things people suggest for reducing its memory footprint without much luck. Not long before I took this screenshot, BonEcho (an unofficial build of Firefox) was up to about 220 MB. (Yes, I have the same problems with the official builds.)
Totally ridiculous.
I’m giving the latest beta of Camino another chance to win me over. There are four main things I’m going to miss from Firefox, though:
- Web Developer extension
- Firebug extension
- del.icio.us Bookmarks extension
- Ability to set Google Reader as the default feed reader
Firefox’s memory and CPU usage has been getting a bit silly on my iBook too (currently 217MB of RSS mem and 47% CPU after three days open), but it’s still been usable as far as interactivity goes. As long as I don’t have to do anything else memory or CPU-intensive…
The only reason I use Firefox for Mac is because of Firebug. But I have to restart the browser every 3 hours in order to get my system back – FF simply hogs all the resources. Camino is my browser of choice, and it will run AJAX apps (Google Mail, Calendar, etc.) for days without any interupts or need to restart.
Totally forgot about Firebug. I’m going to add that to the post.
For me, Fx’s virtual memory usage is often really high (422M as of writing this; Fx has been running without restart for about 2 days), but the real memory footprint hasn’t been abnormal for ages. Never seems to go above about 100M — and that’s only if it’s been running constantly for over a week. I remember it being higher when I tried using RSS feeds, but not since. Not sure why it does that.
While we’re on the topic of Fx’s flaws, is there any hope of ever being saved from the constant and endless
bookmarks.htmlduplicates? It was funny for the first few times, but regularly having to trash and deletebookmarks-1.htmlthrubookmarks-231.htmlis getting plain stupid. And no, I have no add-ons that work with bookmark files, so I know it’s Fx itself.Recently Firefox has been tanking on me for no reason as well. I’ve had Firefox memory footprints at around 1,500MB+ in the past with no issues (XP not OSX), but recently it will just hang on me even in the 100-200MB range.
Same issue in both 1.5.x and 2.0.x…
