Is anyone else finding recent releases of Firefox to be totally unusable after a couple hours? I’ve done some of the things people suggest for reducing its memory footprint without much luck. Not long before I took this screenshot, BonEcho (an unofficial build of Firefox) was up to about 220 MB. (Yes, I have the same problems with the official builds.)
Totally ridiculous.
I’m giving the latest beta of Camino another chance to win me over. There are four main things I’m going to miss from Firefox, though:
- Web Developer extension
- Firebug extension
- del.icio.us Bookmarks extension
- Ability to set Google Reader as the default feed reader
Mike Arrington says (via Scripting News) that AllPeers is going to be Firefox’s killer app. It’s a plugin that will allow you to share files with people on a buddy list.
I think it’s an absolutely brilliant idea. I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
Anyone want to make a guess at how long it will be before the copyright cartels attack AllPeers?
Okay. Last Apple-related post of the night.
Neil Lee has released a G5-optimized build of Firefox 1.5 (via TUAW). So far, I’m not really able to see much of an improvement over the official build. Maybe I’ll notice a difference tomorrow when I’m doing real work.
Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 has been released. Just in time, too. Firefox 1 was slow, crashed a lot, and didn’t allow me to tab to radio and select elements. I’ve even been considering replacing it with Safari, Shiira, or Camino. This beta fixes at least one of those problems. Maybe two. It’s definitely a lot faster. There is no lag when typing, switching tabs, or scrolling. I’ve only been running it for a few minutes, so I don’t know if it will crash less. But I still can’t tab through forms, which is very disappointing.
There are a couple new things that I really like, too. Drag-and-drop tabs scratch one of my big itches. I can’t count the number of times I’ve wanted to be able to reorder my tabs. The new preferences window for the OS X version is very nice, too.
Before installing this, keep in mind that most, if not all, of your Firefox extensions will stop working.
