I wish Wired Magazine would publish more articles like Vinod Khosla’s essay about his investments in the biofuel industry. Reading someone’s thoughts firsthand, rather than through a mediator, makes for more compelling reading. Sort of like a blog.

Why does my phone make my computer chirp?

In a GSM system in particular, the pre-ring chirps you see are the phone negotiating with the serving tower for a traffic [voice] channel on a particular frequency band and timeslice (versus the pre-allocated and shared control channel) to carry your conversation.
